The PSCI Wastewater Analysis Project Final Report NOW AVAILABLE

The PSCI Wastewater Analysis Project Final Report NOW AVAILABLE

Document

The PSCI Wastewater Analysis Project report presents the outcomes of a multi‑year, collaborative initiative from 2022 to 2025.

In response to growing regulatory and stakeholder focus on pharmaceutical emissions and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), this project set out to evaluate whether in‑region laboratories in India can reliably measure active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in wastewater at very low concentrations. Strengthening regional analytical capability is critical to improving data reliability and reducing reliance on international sample shipment.

Through a structured, multi‑phase approach, PSCI members collaborated with selected laboratories to:

  • Assess analytical capability and infrastructure
  • Compare results with established reference laboratories
  • Identify gaps in consistency, accuracy, and reproducibility
  • Generate practical, actionable recommendations

How to Use This Publication
This report is intended as a guidance and learning resource for PSCI members. It supports:

  • More informed selection and engagement with analytical laboratories
Improved understanding of wastewater API testing challenges
Strengthened environmental risk assessment and decision‑making
  • It is not intended as a ranking or endorsement of any laboratory.

PSCI extends its sincere thanks to the four member companies who contributed to this work Pfizer, Centrient Pharmaceuticals, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Novartis for their technical expertise, sample contributions, and sustained engagement throughout the project.

We invite thoughts/feedback on the report here. Thank you!

PSCI Webinar: EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in Practice

PSCI Webinar: EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in Practice

Webinar | 22 Oct 2026 15:00–16:00 Amsterdam

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is now in force, and many suppliers are still working through what the requirements mean for their packaging, data, documentation and operations.
Following the release of the PSCI Supplier Guide, we are organising a dedicated webinar to provide a practical overview of the EU PPWR, explore its implications for suppliers, and focus on the practical questions that matter most to you.

We want to hear from you: this session will be shaped around the questions that matter most to you!

We invite you to submit your questions ahead of the session to address them during the webinar. No question is too simple, too broad, or too specific. All questions will be consolidated and anonymised, allowing us to focus the session on common concerns and provide practical answers that are relevant to the wider supplier community. What are you unsure about? What are your customers asking for? Where are you encountering challenges? Submit your questions on topics such as implementation timelines, packaging scope, data expectations, supporting evidence or responsibilities across the value chain. No question is too simple or too specific.

What are your most pressing EU PPWR questions? Submit them by October 10th by answering this short Survey Monkey!

Speakers:

  • Marion Briggs – Marion has a wealth of experience in the pharma sector, as both a specialist for take-back programs, end-of-life challenges and solutions and circular economy for medical devices, and as a leader and driver of multistakeholder partnerships. She is also a regular speaker and moderator in the injection device space and has been Executive Director or Board Chair across a wide variety of organizations. She currently leads the PSCI PPWR project.
  • Stéphanie Finet - Stéphanie is a sustainability professional with extensive experience in the pharmaceutical, med-tech, and waste sectors. Passionate about driving business impact on climate and communities, she supports organizations in accelerating their sustainability journey. She has deep expertise on the regulatory hurdles around end of life and packaging, with recent emphasis on PPWR and its implications for pharma and suppliers in particular.
  • Stuart Moroney - Stuart has specialist expertise in producer responsibility, with a particular focus on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), and End of Waste assessments. Drawing on 18 years' experience as a Senior Regulatory Officer with the Environment Agency, Stuart advises clients on the implications of packaging and waste legislation, helping businesses respond to evolving UK and European compliance requirements. Stuart is also a Chartered Waste Manager with the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM).
